If you have gone through the MFA process and set it to prompt you every 24 hours or 30 days but continue to be prompted to do it each time you login, it could be due to one (or more) of the following:
- You are accessing the system using a VPN. VPNs use dynamic IP addresses, which means your internet connection isn’t always routing from the same location or network. When you log into the MLS system, MFA uses your device + IP address as part of its “trust check.”
If it sees a new IP address, it treats that as a potentially unrecognized location and will ask for MFA again to confirm it’s really you.
- Accessing the internet from different locations using the same laptop can cause you to be prompted to redo the MFA process each time you change locations. This is because your device's IP address will change with each location. Since IP address is one of the factors the MFA process uses during its trust check (as mentoned in #1 above), using a new/different IP address when attempting to login (even though it is the same device that has already been authenticated, and possibly even a location that has been used before) can be enough to trigger the MFA process again.
- Your browser is set to automatically delete cookies upon closing. When a site uses a MFA, your browser stores a cookie for a set amount of time (in the case of SmartMLS- 24 hours or 30 days, depending upon your selection) that allows logins from that device for that time period. If your browser is set to automatically delete cookies every time it is closed, you will be prompted to redo the MFA every time you log in.
Click here for step-by-step instructions on how to adjust this setting in the three most common browsers: Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge and Mozilla Firefox. This does not include instructions for Apple's Safari browser because Safari does not have an auto-delete cookies setting.
- You are accessing the SmartMLS login from an out of date browser bookmark. If your browser bookmark was saved prior to when we began using our new log in system, it is redirecting you and this redirect is causing the prompt to redo the MFA.
Simply navigate directly to www.SmartMLS.com and click the MLS Login button in the upper right hand corner of the page. As long as you have an active MFA, you will not be prompted to enter a new code.
Junk or bloatware extensions are interfering with the MFA. Oftentimes, when you download a program onto your computer it will add and enable browser extensions that may conflict with active MFAs. Most of these extensions are unnecessary and frequently added to mine your data. Unless you are 100% certain of what an extension does, you should disable it or remove it from your device.
