Browser extensions and SmartMLS products

Browser extensions can cause issues when trying to use SmartMLS products (as well as many other non-MLS websites) due to various factors, including security vulnerabilities, performance slowdowns and conflicts with other extensions or websites.

Our support team has run into multiple instances where unknown or untrusted browser extensions have had a negative impact on the accessibility or performance of SmartMLS programs.

Security Risks

Malicious Extensions: Extensions can be designed with malicious intent, potentially stealing data, tracking user activity, or injecting unwanted advertisements.

Compromised Updates: Even trusted extensions can be compromised through malicious updates, leading to the installation of harmful software.

Excessive Permissions: Extensions may request extensive permissions to access user data and modify web pages, which can be misused.

Performance Issues

Slowdown: Poorly coded or resource-intensive extensions can significantly slow down the browser and overall computer performance.

Resource Consumption: Extensions can consume significant system resources, leading to crashes, freezes, or other performance problems.

Conflicts: Extensions can conflict with each other or with websites, causing unexpected behavior or errors.

Privacy Concerns

Data Collection: Extensions can collect sensitive information beyond their intended purpose, risking users' privacy.

Data Leaks: Malfunctioning or malicious extensions can lead to data leaks, exposing sensitive information to unauthorized parties.

Other Issues

Website Compatibility: Extensions can sometimes interfere with the way websites are displayed or function.

Unintentional Malfunction: Extensions can malfunction or become outdated, leading to unexpected problems.

How to Mitigate Risks

Install Extensions from Trusted Sources: Only install extensions from reputable sources like the official browser extension store.

Review Permissions Carefully: Before installing an extension, carefully review its permissions and ensure they are necessary for its intended function.

Keep Extensions Updated: Regularly update extensions to the latest versions to ensure they are secure and free from vulnerabilities.

Disable Unused Extensions: Disable extensions that you are not actively using to reduce the risk of security vulnerabilities and performance issues.

Use a Password Manager: Use a password manager to store and manage your passwords securely, reducing the risk of data breaches.

Enable Two-Factor Authentication: Enable two-factor authentication for your online accounts to add an extra layer of security.
